42 imagesSouth Africa and Democracy The First Twenty Years. This exhibition brings together photographs, documents and artefacts illustrating the unique story of South Africa's journey into democracy — President Mandela's "cherished ideal". It marks the twentieth year of the new country and the fiftieth year since Mandela and his co-accused were sentenced to life imprisonment at the Rivonia Trial. The treasures come from the separate archives of the South African Universities of Cape Town, Witwatersrand and Fort Hare. Some of them have never before been displayed outside South Africa.
